Dating App Monetization: Subscriptions, Boosts and What Converts
Freemium tiers, consumable boosts, and hybrid models compared — plus the paywall placement decisions that move revenue most.
Subscriptions are the base layer
Tiered subscriptions — unlimited likes, see who liked you, advanced filters, rewind — remain the highest-LTV model in the category. Weekly plans convert better than monthly for younger audiences; annual plans carry the margin.
Consumables fund the spikes
Boosts and super-likes are impulse purchases tied to a moment of intent. They convert best when surfaced immediately after a near-miss: a profile viewed twice, a match that went quiet, a Friday evening session.
Paywall placement
Do not paywall the first match. Let users feel the loop work, then gate the escalation — who liked you, or the fifth conversation of the day. The difference between a well-placed and a badly-placed paywall in our builds has been 2-3x on trial starts.
Instrument everything
Every monetization decision should be a measured experiment. We wire analytics and an experimentation framework into the MVP so pricing work in month six is data-led rather than a guess.
