Trust and Safety Features Every Dating App Needs at Launch

Verification, moderation tooling, and reporting flows are launch requirements, not v2 features. Here is the minimum credible set.

Verification before volume

Selfie-pose verification against profile photos removes the majority of catfish accounts at a cost of seconds per user. Phone verification stops the cheapest bulk account creation. Both belong in the first release.

Reporting that closes the loop

A report button that silently does nothing is worse than none. Users need to see acknowledgment, an outcome, and an immediate block. Internally, reports need a queue with severity, evidence snapshots and audit history.

Build the moderation console alongside the app. It is the tool your operations team lives in, and retrofitting it is always more expensive.

Proactive signals

Device and payment fingerprinting to catch ban evasion. Rate limits on messaging to blunt scam campaigns. Automated scanning of first messages for known scam patterns and off-platform contact requests.

The compliance floor

Age assurance, clear data retention policies, a documented deletion path, and region-specific requirements where you operate. Getting this wrong is an existential risk for a dating product, not a fine.
